Our Managing Partner, Theodoros Economou, delivered on 8/11/2023 a presentation at the University of Cyprus, focusing on the critical issue of SLAPP (Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation). This event represented a significant contribution to the ongoing discourse in the legal community, particularly in relation to the intersection of law, freedom of speech, and democratic participation.
Theodoros shared the stage with esteemed legal scholars: Professor Aristotelis Constantinides and Professor Alina Tryfonidou, specialists in International Law and European Law, respectively. Their collective insights significantly enriched the discussion, offering a multifaceted view of the topic.
The presentation centered on the challenges and implications of SLAPP in today’s legal environment, illustrating how these lawsuits have become a growing concern for freedom of expression and public participation in democratic processes.
A key aspect of the presentation was the analysis of existing and proposed legal frameworks, including the EU Directive, aimed at countering the effects of SLAPPs. Emphasis was placed on the necessity for legal systems to evolve to protect public participation and uphold fundamental freedoms against such legal threats.
The presentation was more than just a lecture; it served as a dynamic platform for exchanging ideas among a diverse audience of students, faculty, and legal professionals. This interaction highlighted the evolving nature of law and its essential role in safeguarding democratic principles.
We express our sincere appreciation to the University of Cyprus and the Group of Legal Education UCY for organizing the event.
